Kena by Katrina, so our pump prices go gila... yeah right!

This week, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico hard. 30% of its oil production facilities were halted. This sent oil prices rocketing. But does this make any sense? Lets crunch some numbers. The world's top 20 oil producers contribute about 90% of our oil supply, 7.5% of this comes from Mexico. This is about 6.8% of the world's supply. It has been reported that about a third of the facilities are disrupted by the hurricane, this brings the percentage of oil supply interrupted by the hurricane to only 2.3% of the world's oil supply. Someone just needs to turn their oil tap a little more and voila, all settled. I'm sure there are a lot of someones out there turning their taps and using Katrina as an excuse to rob us common peasants off out daily bread. 2.3% of the world's oil supply interrupted by a stupid hurricane and out prices shoot up by 10%! I really wonder whose ass they pull this logic out of! Well, at least my friend Swee Kian had it figured out. He's cycling back from Finland... no need any oil for that. That'll teach those bastards!

Wash n Run

Ah, the first free car wash in Singapore (if I were to interpret this my way). Taking this in the context of 'touch and go', 'hit and run', 'splash and dash', then 'Wash and Run' would mean, wash then run away. Thanks for the free car wash, Mobil.

Prez hopeful kinda quite fail... there goes the Saturday off.

Just when I thought that I was finally going to get half a day off for our presidential elections, I find myself having to think again. Of course there's the other smart one who still remains below the media's radar but the person I am referring to is Mr Andrew Kuan. A former CFO of JTC, with an interesting career (if some of the truths are hidden), this guy seemed like a probable alternative. Then he decided to go public, and successfully slimed himself big time even before nomination day! What amazes me is that this guy is a member of the PAP! He claims to have joined the PAP to learn from the best, to understand how the political process functions and how PAP works. I don't think he did a good job learning the trick of the trade. If he did, then he should have learnt that in order to stand for election, especially in good 'ol Singapore, you've got to be squeaky clean. By squeaky clean, I mean, you've got to have zero dirt on you. Not even a detention class when you were in primary school! Better don't surf porn sites too, sure kena find out one. So this guy comes along to try for prez. He tries to gain the moral high ground by sliming his ex-neighbour... but damn suay, ex-neighbour is a litigation lawyer so now mebe cannot be prez but going to kena sue instead. His ex-employers one by one come out say this guy REALLY cannot make it one. Guess dat's why he change job like change clothes. I really want the Saturday off 'cos I don't work for the gahmen and I have no 5-day week. But this guy really cannot make it lor… sigh… I don't think he will get his COE (Certificate of Eligibility) lah. Now my only hope of a Saturday off is this other mysterious guy who is currently still beneath the media radar and I have this to say to him/her. 'Diam diam first... till get COE then come out and talk ok? Don't COE haven't get yet then kena slime liao. At least if you get COE, I get Saturday off.' Yes, it's all about me and my Saturday off. But then again, that is why I don't run for public office.

Dress down, save energy.

The Japanese are doing it. The Chinese are doing it. Even the Taiwanese are doing it. Dressing down to reduce energy consumption. Here's the idea. You wear less, so that buildings can turn up the thermostat of their air-conditioning. Hence, conserving the energy used by buildings. I don't get this. So we are supposed to wear less clothing and hope that building managers turn up the temperature? Why not building operators turn the temperature up first? This way people will have no choice but to take of their jackets, hence wear less. I mean, what are these people thinking?

Cycling from the Arctic Circle to the Equator

Swimming the English Channel seems like a big deal! 34 kilometers! 11 to 13 hours in the icy cold waters! This Thum guy is getting plenty press coverage for what he's about to do. Meanwhile, way below the radar screen of the media, 2 guys are on their way home from Finland. On bicycle! Here's how I found out about them. I met Frog the other day, and somewhere in our conversation, I kind of commented that we've not heard from Swee Kian for awhile. (No periodic pictures in the email.) And Frog's reply? "Oh, that's 'cos he's on his way home, should be back by next year. He cycling back." I don't really know what made them do it. Perhaps it's the challenge of cycling the distance. Perhaps Shimano wants to do a durability test on their parts. Or maybe, airfare too expensive nowadays. Whatever it is, they are on their way. In fact, I think they are halfway here after having cycling 15,000km in the last one year. Personally, I think this deserves more media coverage than a short swim across some channel that many have tried. Way to go, Swee Kian! See you soon!

Jekyll and Hyde... I found him... er I mean, her.

Ah, its not everyday that we come across a Jekyll and Hyde, but I guess I was just lucky to stumble into one, figuratively, that is. I found this Jekyll and Hyde on the Internet. Jekyll, a really nice and friendly person who loves to make friends, even if it means leaving a comment in the blog of a stranger. So sweet, so friendly. Too friendly, I'd say. Any normal person would have just left a nice non-anonymous comment. Jekyll, well, she had to post her email address as well. Just check out this sweet comment she left on someone else's blog, even signing off with a smile. Soooooo sweeeet!!! Now, let's see what happens when she gets off the wrong side of her bed. This email was written by her to some bloke who chatted her up on friendster. This nice and gentle Jekyll suddenly becomes Hyde! A simple 'I'm not interested in being friends', would generally suffice for most people. But I guess Hyde is different. To make sure the message gets across, she sent an email with a payload of profanities and threats. Split personality? Schizophrenia? Or has someone found Jekyll's lost formula and put it to use? Hmm... Guess I'd better leave this post as it is because I really hate consequences that are not pretty and also, Hyde has a way of sniffing me out. (Not to mention my photo is on this blog.) Disclaimer: 1) This post was made because I thought it is interesting to see the Jekyll and Hyde behavior in a non-fictional arena, and being a gracious person, I just thought I'd share it with my readers. 2) I have no relation with either parties. I just thought this is interesting material. Should anyone find it distasteful and offensive, please leave me a note. I'll have it removed. Note: The identity of all involved are blanked out to protect the privacy (or what's left of it) of all parties involved.
