Singapore pledges US$50,000 to the Humanitarian Effort in Lebanon

Ah... sweet... our generosity at work again. We just pledged US$50K to Lebanon... This is by no means a huge sum of money for peasants like me, however, if we look at it from a larger picture, this is not even worth one peanut... this is probably like maybe one sixth of a peanut. Maybe we should just send them a jar of Skippy peanut butter... heh heh... My question is, why so kiam siap... only pledge US$50K? You can't even buy a Lexus IS250 in Singapore with this kind of moolah lor... Really ah, I think if lidat, might as well don't give lor... damn lak seh man!

Commuters in Singapore can rejoice!

Commuters in Singapore can rejoice! In the midst of public transport fee 'adjustments', the Public Transport Commission has decided that public transport company must have certain levels of service to adhere to or risk getting slapped with a fine. I mean if you pay more, then must have better service mah... fair right? The service standards cover six essential aspects of service - * Bus service reliability - for example, at least 85 percent of bus services should not deviate more than 5 minutes from the scheduled frequency * Loading - for example, weekday peak period bus loading shouldn't exceed 95 percent * Safety * Provision of information * Availability of bus services * Integration with other modes of public transport This idea looks damn good man. Companies, scared kena fine, sure provide good service one right? Ok, set. Can sell car, take bus liao. Ur... wait ah... what if these companies kena fine until buay tahan leh? Fines slapped on them is like operational cost right? So... operational cost increase then what happen leh? 'Adjust' prices lor... Lidat then who really suffer for poor service? You say leh? You say leh? Toad, the soothsayer says, "Service standards will remain world class*. But public transport prices will definitely be first class." *Most parts of the world do not have public transports... so tell me, do we really want to aim for world class ah?

Toadjuice goes to Batam...

Spent the weekend on the dusty Indonesian Island of Batam. When I told a friend about it, all I got was a "Why you dirty old man." comment. Well, I did get downright dirty... riding 140km of the Barelang Highway isn't exactly the right kind of thing to be doing to stay squeaky clean. Heh heh... After 6 hours of riding, you get all kinds of grime stuck to your body with a nice sunburnt skin to match. Getting the bicycles onto the ferry was a puzzling experience. We had to wheel our bicycles up to the second floor... for check-in. I was like... ferry upstairs meh? Then when we entered the ferry, the bicycles were there... in the same place. The clowns from the other side of the counter kind of just wheeled them back down. The ferry was unbelievably crowded... with a lot of imaginary friends. Seats that looked empty were apparently occupied by 'friends' that never appeared. The bus ride to the hotel took about an hour, and gave us a preview of the hills to come. In fact, we were so intimidated by the hills that we decided that we had to eat more to fuel ourselves the for ride. Club Sandwich, Carbonara, Nasi Goreng, Mee Goreng, Beer Bintang... everyone had something... Breakfast in the hotel sucked big time. The only good thing about breakfast was the expresso machine. I was glad I had mee goreng in a corner stall the night before. 9am, the ride began... 10 km from the Holiday Inn to the beginning of the Barelang Highway... 10km more to the start of the first bridge... some hills to prepare us for what's to come. The ride to the first bridge was awesome. As we approached the first bridge, the grandeur of its massive cable stays appear before us, slowly revealing the whole bridge. The next bridge was not too far ahead, however with the numerous rolling hills to cover, I soon lost count of the numeber of bridges crossed. What seemed like a highway of endless hills finally ended with a small roundabout. 20 minutes of replenishing ourselves with nourisments, we were back on the road again. Thos endless rolling hills... finally, after 6 hours of ass breaking spinning, we were back at the hotel... indeed a ride worth remembering...

The Beast

I guess this pretty much sums up what love is, doesn't it? Heh heh... one of my favourite song from a long time ago by Concrete Blonde. == The prey of the beast screamed bloody murder The line is so fine between hoping and hurting Former believers they beg for release As love looking down on them smiles and picks his teeth Trapped in between heaven and hell he knows all the secrets and don't want to tell There's nowhere to run and there's nowhere to hide Love knows you all too well He will find you Love is the ghost haunting your head Love is the killer you thought was your friend Love is the creature who lives in the dark Sneaks up, will stick you and painfully pick you apart Love is a poet, love sings the songs Pointing his finger you follow along Voice are calling, the monster wants out of you paws you and claws you, you try not to fall Love is the leech, sucking you up Love is a vampire, drunk on your blood Love is the beast that will tear out your heart Hungrily lick it and painfully pick it apart Love is a ghost, haunting your head Love is the killer you thought was your friend Love is the teacher who lives in the dark Sneak up and stick you and painfully pick you apart

Should Cigarette Smokers feel discriminated?

With effect from 1 July 2006, if you've gotta take a puff in a Singapore coffee shop, you'll have to look for a DSC. Yup, that's what they call it. "Designated Smoking Corner". Why CORNER ah? Are they inferring that smokers always go relak one korner? Make the area sound damn bad so that smokers will quit smoking issit? If that's the case, why not call these areas "Cancer Stations"? Anyway to all you burning tobacco inhalers out there... remember to look for a DSC before sitting down... in a fine city such as ours, you don't really want to discover the penalty the hard way.

Don't you just hate love?

"Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life... You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love." - neil gaiman

Dangers of cycling...

The past few weeks of cycling have taught me one thing... it is more dangerous to clean the bike than to ride it. 2 weeks ago - wash bike... gear cut my fingers... Today - wash bike... gear cut big toe... blood come out... look damn nice sia... Next time, I shall year safety boots to wash my bike... sigh...

Osim Tri - Race Analysis

The race is finally over... I am still trying to overcome the initial shock that I have subjected my body to. While my body is trying to get out of shock, here is an analysis of my race. Total timing was 3 hours 3 mins and 43 seconds. Okay lah... better than my anticipated 3 and a half hours.

Time

What Actually Happened

Actual Strategy Carried out

Mental State

Breakfast

N.A.

N.A.

I did not wake up at 4.30am. I had to get up to pee several times through the night though.

Met the rest of the Average Joes for breakfast at Killiney Kopitiam

I was relaxed. Woke up with ample time for a good crap, so my mind was clear.

I reminded myself that I just need to finish before the last guy.

Pre-Race

N.A.

N.A.

Needed to pee really badly at the race ground, so bo pian, went to the smelly portable toilet as the sea to too far. Next time better don't drink too much water.

Drank that stupid Gatorade which helped during the swim.

I stayed relaxed. We passed time decorating our body markings.

Swim

31'45"

I was stuck behind an idiot that cannot swim if his life depended on it. I got stuck in the crowd. A cramped developed after the first lap.

Bad swim leg.

N.A.

I couldn't give a shit about my strokes anymore. I was more interested in preventing idiots from hitting me.

After the first lap, I really didn't give a shit about who I hit.

T1

-

Had to hobble to the transition area thanks to the cramp. Saw Allan there.

Drank lots of water as I know I will be short of it during the bike run.

I remember thinking that this will be the easiest part of the race and that I should go slow and enjoy it. I was relaxed.

Bike

1h27'

Stupid bike computer keeps telling me that my average speed was 17kmh. Took me the whole bloody 4 laps to bring the average to 24.8kmh. Half the time, I was travelling about 27kmh. Almost fell off my bike twice. Got to remember to concentrate next time.

I managed to drink 25% of my honey mixture every lap. On the last lap, I took the gooey Power Gel. I guess It must have helped.

I focused on my pedalling. But forgot to focus on the cycling part. That's why I almost fell. Twice. Next time must remember to focus on the ride as well. I believe I managed to strike a few poses for both the video and camera guys.

T2

-

Feeling dehydrated. Parked bike, drank some water and I was away for the running leg.

None.

As I perform my transition tasks, food was the last thing on my mind. I was wondering what possessed me into signing up.

Run

1h04'

I ran and not walk. But the rest of the Average Joes see it differently.

In my defence, I ran slowly.

I made sure I looked good finishing the race though...

I drank from every aid station. It helped. I'm still alive and not dead from heat stroke or something.

The chick in front of me was my motivation. Till she ran out of my sight. That was the low point.

Post-Race

N.A.

N.A.

No mood for drinks. I think I was aptly hydrated.

Special thanks to Ben and Shan for Bayshore. The dip was a saver.

We had Taiwan Porridge for dinner and Gelare for dessert. This was after some nourishment of satays and fishballs at the hawker center.

The fence sitter has decided to come down.

After years of sitting on the fence and not taking a stand on anything and everything, yours truly, the king of the fence, under the influence of the ultimate force of the universe, have decided to step down. The problem would be, which side of the fence to come off. Ah, always a dilema there eh? Why do you think I've been on the fence... heh... heh... I've decided to go on the side of the fence that I've not been for the last 3 years... hope I won't get thrown back to the other side... Update: I'm off the fence, officially. Not on the side that I hoped for, but definitely off the fence.
